手記の作者、フルール＝ディオニューソス氏は1852年の8月24日午前2時頃、バミューダ・トライアングルにて忽然と姿を消した。
彼の失踪を聞いたイギリス政府は即座に捜索へと身を乗り出したが、遂に彼の遺体さえ発見することができなかった。
この奇怪な事件はイギリスのみならずヨーロッパ全域に波及し、解明不可能な七不思議の一つとして現在も親しまれている。
一体ディオニューソス氏はどこへ消えたのか。それを知る鍵は彼が失踪直前に残したこの手記のみである。
