American schools often have competitions which we call "Spelling Bees". English spelling is very difficult and children have to memorize many rules. Some words have letters which we do not pronounce at all, like the final "e" in "time". We call this "silent e",and it is one of the rules we have to learn. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn these rules. In spelling bees,students have to spell words without paper or a pencil. For example,one of the teachers reads the word "happy" and says,"Please spell this word." The students then has to spell the word out loud, like "H-A-P-P-Y". If the student spells the word correctly, he or she moves on to the next round, like in a tournament. The words become harder and harder. In the final rounds, students have to spell words like "psoriasis" and "oophagous", which are very difficult. Some words have different spelling systems from English, because English Language has words from many other languages. To win a spelling bee, students have to know a lot of things.
